My topic is
advertising and the impact it has on popular culture. My research question is: How do magazines and
commercial ads on television manipulate/impact young men and women? I don't
know what word to use before young men and women yet. I am not sure what I want the impact to be
specifically yet, but with further research I am getting more ideas. I would
like to talk about how these advertisements grasp the attention of these young
adults. What has popular culture made people think they need and want? I have
the article Men's Men and Women's Women,
which describes different ways advertisements, appeal to people. I plan to
analyze more about how advertisements use the American Dream, Sexy women, Hot
me, etc. to make profit. I can also integrate some of the history of advertisements.
Analyze methods that have changed or even stayed the same.
At the
moment, I do not have enough information to answer my question completely. I do
know that some advertisements use the opposite sex to appeal to the audience.
They also use the rags to riches stories, they use the method of physiologically
making some one think that they absolutely need what they are promoting. I also
know that advertising has been around for a long time, but it was not as
flamboyant as it is now. Advertisements were not everywhere and they were more
conservative. Right now, with just the little information I have, I know that advertisement's
impact young adults by having them reflect on their own body image, by putting
people into certain stereotypes and by grabbing their emotions. Sometimes
people can really relate to a certain advertisement causing them to want to get
the product or service. Advertiser's use
celebrities, brand names, sexiness, and lifestyles.
I still need
to research more on the history of advertising. When it began to bloom, what
were they advertising and to who the most. I want to know more methods
specifically and find examples. I want to find out what method works the best.
I want to find some positive and some negative outcomes of advertising. Reading
some research on some of the affects advertising has on Americans as a whole. I
just changed my topic, so I'm jumping around with different ideas but this is
an overall picture of what I would like to write my essay on.
The pre-teen group is called a tween, a child nearing puberty, (approximately ages 9 to 12. They are a huge market. This is from the urban dictionary, "Very easy to market to, will usually follow any fashion trend set for them, will most likely go through the phase of 'finding themselves' as they 'grow up'. " As proof, the Olsen twins partnered with WalMart and became young billionaires by selling directly to this market. People also forget boys are tweens, they buy a lot of stuff too.
ReplyDeleteSomething to consider is the very thin line between persuasion and manipulation, and how that impacts advertising. Think about the language that different advertisements use. Are they using negative tactics like sadness, shame, guilt, embarrassment, disgust?
ReplyDeleteAre you only going to look at certain magazines and channels, such as ones frequented by your age group, or are you going to look at them as a whole? I think it is a great idea to include history and methods, like you mentioned. You sound like you are off to a good start. Analyzing things like the american dream and others sounds like it would work well for your paper.
